Project Spotlight: Upper Missouri River & Sun River HDD Main Crossings Presented at National NASTT Conference

Following receipt of the 2019 MT ACEC Water Resources Honor Award, an Abstract summarizing ‘Lessons Learned’ during the Missouri and Sun River Water Main Crossings project was submitted to the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) for publication and presentation.

Acceptance to the 2021 No-Dig Show was received in late 2020 and members of the project team have since been drafting a technical paper and developing the presentation.

The presentation is scheduled for March 30, 2021 at 7:15 – 7:40 MST.  The slideshow PDF can be accessed at the following link:

The $5.5 million Horizontal Directional Drilling installation of fusible PVC (FPVC) pipe included a 3,600-foot long, 24-inch diameter Missouri River crossing and a 1,600-foot long, 20-inch diameter Sun River crossing, the two largest/longest HDD projects completed in Montana.

By emphasizing many of the lessons learned identified in the No-Dig presentation, the City of Great Falls awarded TD&H and Brierley Associates a study, design and construction services contract for a major sewer forcemain crossing the Missouri River. As a City priority for several years, the project garnered interest from several of the most established engineering firms in the U.S. and Canada, including four of the 2020 Top 10 Design Firms ranked by Engineering News-Record.
